"A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history."
- Mahatma Ghandi
Friends,
For some time now, I have been living in Los Angeles and pursuing work in the film industry. As much as this has been an adventure, I have come to the ultimate conclusion that it is not time for me to settle down and work here. So, what will I do now? For starters, I will be going to India!
I have the privilege of joining Global Outreach Developments International (G.O.D. Int'l) on a three-week journey to India, from July 10 - August 8. Our destination is the Uttar Pradesh district, where we will interact primarily to the "untouchables" caste. While Uttar Pradesh is one of the greatest cultural centers of Northern India, its people suffer in great poverty, as it is the poorest state per capita in India. One of its major failings is a lack of education, with literacy rates under 50% for both males and females. India is one of many third world countries that suffers in tragic poverty, sickness, and death on a daily basis. Globally, 30,000 children die every day from starvation of preventable diseases. Nearly one billion people live on less than a dollar a day, and nearly 2 billion on less than 2 dollars a day. You've probably heard these statistics before - I know I have. But it is good for us to remember that many of these people cannot cry out for themselves, and thus we must cry out on their behalf.
Some join organizations such as UNICEF and the Peace Corps in an effort to reach out to these people. For myself, my care for them is motivated by the knowledge that they are created by the same God who made me. Likewise, they are equally loved by Him. As a follower of Christ, I am required to exemplify to these people (and indeed, all people) the love of God and his care for them individually. I've joined with G.O.D. Int'l specifically because they share this belief, and we are unified in being motivated by the same faith.
Our ministry to these people will be multifaceted; we will love on them, listen to them, share with them, and simply be with them; acknowledging in each of these actions that these are God’s beloved, and we act as the tangible expression of His love. We will bring medical supplies, teach, work, sing, and dance with them, perform skits and play games. Undoubtedly this trip will result in the transformation of our lives and, we hope, theirs.
If you are reading this blog right now, it is because I have sought you out, either personally or indirectly, in order to share with you this story and the potential you have to be a part of it. This journey is not just about me. When I go to India, and I speak to the people there, I will represent every person who ever loved them and prayed for them, but was unable to go. I will represent every person who donated funds, moral support, and prayer to my journey, and in doing so were able to be a part of this journey themselves. I will represent you.
I am responsible for raising $3250, the full cost of my participation in the trip. If what I have said resonates with you, and you want to be a part of this journey, I will gladly accept your financial support. If you would like to contribute to the India trip, you can do so here, or mail a check (with memo: sara davis, da mission) to:
G.O.D Int'l
401 Center St.
Old Hickory, TN 37138
You will receive a receipt (and thank you!) for this contribution, which is also tax-deductible. If by God's grace I receive more than the required amount donated, this support will be distributed among others raising funds as well.
I will continue to update this blog as I prepare for the trip, for the benefit of my supporters and for myself! I cannot express the excitement I have for the day I read this blog and remember the amazing journey that was Da' Mission!
Yours Faithfully,
Sara Davis
P.S. Check out last year's "Da Mission"!!
Sara, What a wonderful opportunity! I will definitely be praying for you as you prepare and travel to India. Do you have a deadline for raising funds?
